Sarah Winkler was born in Manchester, England in 1973. She spent a childhood living abroad in Africa and Borneo where she gained a lifelong passion for the natural world. She studied art in the UK before emigrating to the United States in 1989. Winkler studied Art, Creative Writing and Earth Science at William Paterson University (NJ) and combines those passions in her approach to landscape painting. She has been living and working out West in California and Colorado for over two decades having studios in San Luis Obispo and Berkeley, CA and Denver, CO. Winkler is best known for her monumentally scaled, color rich, luminous paintings that respond to the geological storied past and eventful present of the American Wilderness landscape. Her paintings often include crushed minerals collected from the landscapes to create moments of exploration and discovery in each work. Winkler features the geology and ecology of protected landscapes as her subjects to promote appreciation for wild spaces and encourage their conservation longevity.
Sarah Winkler began exhibiting her art in 2004 and is currently represented in galleries throughout the Western US. Her work has been showcased at the LA Art Fair, Art Aspen and the Jackson Hole Art Fine Art Fair. She has been awarded several major art commissions for public and corporate collections including The Cosmopolitan Hotel of Las Vegas, Vail Health, Chevron HQ, and Viceroy Snowmass, Aspen. Her work is in private collections both nationally and internationally. In 2019, Winkler was selected by the curators of the Fine Art in Embassies program to participate in a three year international exhibition at the US Ambassador's residence in Dushanbe, Tajikstan.
